August 21-23: Sun

The homeschool journey has begun.  I must admit I'm a little apprehensive and nervous about going against the grain.  I'm pretty good at following the crowd, but I am confident in the decision, and just pray I'll be strengthened along the way.

We began on Wednesday with a kick off field trip to Temple Square.  Our first unit of study is about the day and night: the sun, moon and stars. The kids had fun hunting for these objects on the temple and we talked about the symbolism.  I did have a couple people ask why Annabelle wasn't in school, and I just smiled and said, "she is."  haha...so funny.

Thursday was the homeschool park day.  We walked down there and I enjoyed chatting with the other moms in our area and the kids ran around and played together.  When we got home we did a lot of talking about rules and consequences and obedience...If nothing else I hope they will grasp those concepts. Then we talked more about how we are God's children and the creation and colored pictures.  We then read a few books about the sun.  It was fun seeing the surprised look on their faces as I showed them how small the earth is compared to the sun.

Friday we cleaned their bedroom, and talked about being responsible for our things or we have to suffer the natural consequences of having our toys chewed up by the dog.  We then had our math lesson.  Evan is working on learning the numbers, and Annabelle is reviewing numbers and shapes.  "Easy", she says.  Then we played "Go Fish" and put together puzzles.  We then worked on language arts.  Annabelle is working on consonant blends and Evan is learning the sounds of the letters and writing them.

They're both doing really well at their "jobs" which is basically just getting themselves ready for the day and making their bed.  It feels so good that I can take the time with them to work on these things, and don't have to always be rushing.
